About Us
Silverton Volunteer Fire Department (now organized as Silverton San Juan Fire and Rescue Authority) is proudly all volunteer and has been serving the Town of Silverton and Juan San Juan County Colorado since 1879. Silverton is the sole incorporated town in the county and sits at 9318 feet above sea level in the San Juan Mountains. Our 28 members are incredibly dedicated and committed to our mission of fire prevention and saving lives and property. Beyond fire service duties, we play a major role in the community by planning and executing many holiday festivities and collecting and distributing charitable funds and activities for seniors and underprivileged families and children.
Our district is the entirety of San Juan County, 388 square miles, except for a small area on our southern border which is served by Durango Fire Protection District. We are the only department in our county and operate from one station in Silverton. We are first due to structure fires, motor vehicle crashes, wildland and urban interface fires. San Juan County has the highest mean elevation of any county in the United States, 11,240 feet, and many peaks are nearly 14,000 feet. The majority of the county is wilderness maintained by USFS and BLM and we are first due on wildland fires and coordinate incidents with our federal and state partners.
